Muffler Profiles and Selecting a Car
Automotive and Cars February 16th, 2008When you are looking at used cars, the muffler is a piece of equipment to examine. Consider that modern muffler systems must usually be replaced every 3 to 5 years. If the car you are looking at is in that age range, you might need to buy a new muffler sooner than you expected.
Even if the car is quiet when you are out on a test drive, it is important to visually examine the exhaust system. Among other things, you will be looking for signs of rust on the muffler and pipes. Small holes or weak spots can spell a situation where you might need a new muffler within just a few months of purchasing the vehicle. It is also important to make sure that the mounting brackets are in good condition and solid. A new muffler system can fall off as easily as an old one can.
While the long term functioning of a car is always important, you will have to give some additional thought to specific systems. The muffler system tends to be one of those areas that is expensive to replace, and also fails quite often. Needless to say, car loans paired with repair expenses can strain any budget. If you cannot get, or do not have cheap car insurance, that will only add to your financial problems. It is also important to consider how much replacement parts will cost. As an example, if you purchase a used BMW, you may find the cost is very high, and the parts difficult to obtain.
